Legendary actor, director, producer, screenwriter, lyricist, playback singer and choreographer, Kamal Haasan talked to Buzz18 at the Dasavathaaram music release in Chennai. Excerpts:

What is new about Dasavathaaram?

This is the first time I have played 10 characters. It is not just masquerading or changing of garb, they're characters and that's new for me. The screenplay is what I enjoyed doing the most and that's the 11th role I have played – the most pivotal and difficult role. It's like the loneliness of a long distance runner.

What was interesting about this film?

What was interesting about these roles were the appearances and characters, which were backed by an interesting script and that was very important for me. I had a team who believed in me. That was the pre-arranged synergy, which is humbling and elating. I may sound pompous but I have never made a film like that.

WATCH TRAILER: Dasavathaaram

Tell us something about the film.

Dasavathaaram is a film that cuts across time and place. There's a thread of mythology that runs through the film, which will keep you glued throughout the film. It's inspired by the 10 avatars of Lord Vishnu. But I have not taken it seriously, there's just a thin line of Hindu mythology.

Aamir khan is a self-confessed fantic of rajinikanth, who is
ofcourse the arch-rival of kamal haasan.........Thats why
the egotist kamal refuses to acknowledge the greatness of
aamir khan......On the other hand,shah rukh khan(another
arrogant guy) is a big fan of kamal and literally licks his
feet......And,kamal likes shah rukh......Shah rukh even
insulted rajinikanth in his "om shanti om",to
please kamal....

Ooops ... Read this salman ...Fyi

kamal is the only actor to have received four national
awards and seven of his movies have been sent as
india’s official entry to the oscars. Nayagan, in which
he portrayed a mumbai based underworld don, won him the
national award and was sent as india’s official entry
to the oscars. It was listed in the all-time 100 greatest
movies.

Amir is only a miny kamal in case of acting or size.He
copies tom honks very nicely.Just watch&observe.

Kamal is really cut above all indian actors living or
otherwise. His knowledge, passion, skill and experimentation
in the indian context that too limited to tamil alone which
is one of the reason why tamil film goers
"normally" not attracted towards hindhi films.
From late 60s till early 80s tamil film industry was copy
cating hindhi cine industry.

from 90s onwards, tamil industry startedmarching on its
own for good.

Aamir with movies like lagaan, dil chahta hai, sarfarosh,
rang de basanti & now with tzp commands huge respect for
his work & his passion for cinemas,
kamal hassan for me is one of its kind, his passion &
his hard work is unparralled, not only in south indian
cinemas but in indian cinema,
but he has been let down by his "ego"
aamir on the other hand has been far more people friendly,
at least his image is.

Wat r u guyz on about, aamir khan is not only an actor, the
man is an industry himself. The best director, the best actor
and not only that a brilliant playback singer.Which actor
has gone to oscars twice, was it not aamir khan for lagaan
and mangal pandey.Wat say mr kamal hassan,so wen r we going
to see u go to the oscars??

As usual tamilians are their fanatical best trying to raise
kamal haasan beyond everyone else. Truth is this guy called
kamal thinks he is some god's incarnation on earth.
When reality is that most of his movies in last 3-4 years
have bombed badly at the box office. He is no longer the
infleuence he once was with movies like nayagan and apoorva
sahodarangal. Now all he does is self idolatory and as u all
know this is most easy form of self-destruction.

I would say that comparing kamalhassan with aamir is utter
foolishness. It will take years of hardwork for aamir to
stand up to kamal, the legend.Kamal has just commented on the
screenplay of tzp and not against aamir.Dasavatharam will be
a huge success in indian cinema.

ravi May 02, 2008 at 11:35 AM

Amir used to immitate the legendary actor/director padmashri
kamal hassan. As an actor there is no one who can match his
calibre, but may be in direction as he is not a full time
director. But its unfair to compare kamal with any other
actors in bollywood. For sure dasavatharam will make the
entire bollywood to look at south.

Ram May 02, 2008 at 11:31 AM

Lets wait and see whether dashavatharam can make a
difference .
